Flint thought he saw Rue shivering in spite of the heat pouring out of the vents in his squad car.

“Mr. Kessler, tell me again why you didn’t go back to your cabin after you left Ivy’s?”

“I had something personal on my mind regarding my relationship with Ivy. I needed to clear my head, so I took a ride.”

“Did you drive into Jacob’s Ear?”

“Yes sir. I did.”

“Where’d you go when you were in town?”

“I came in on Main and looked at Christmas lights. I never got out of the car except at Spruce Park to use the public restroom. I just drove around.”

“At any point, were you on Silver Dollar Street?”

“I didn’t pay attention. Maybe.”

“It’s just around the corner from Spruce Park.”

Rue folded his arms. “Seems like everything in Jacob’s Ear is just around the corner from Spruce Park.”

Flint smiled. “I guess it is at that. Have you ever been to Jewel Sadler’s house?”

“No, but I drive by there all the time, since it’s on Main Street.”

“What about Deke and Roscoe’s house?”

Rue shook his head. “I don’t even know where it is.”

“It’s on Tanner’s Ridge Road. And you had to have passed right by it on the way up to Tanner’s Ridge, where you claim you were stargazing the night they were assaulted.”

Rue massaged the back of his neck. “Sheriff, I told Lieutenant Knolls everything. I had nothing to do with those beatings. I’ve always spent a lot of time alone. It’s not out of the ordinary for me.”

“Do you travel alone too?”

“Sometimes. Not real often.”

“Ever been to Missouri?”

Flint was sure Rue shifted his weight.

“When I was a kid, my parents took me to St. Louis to see the arch.”

“Have you been there recently?”

“No sir. I just saw the arch that one time.”

“I mean to Missouri.”

“No, not recently.”

“Ever been to Kansas City?”

Rue cracked his knuckles. “I’m sure I have. It’s on the way to St. Louis.”

“Yeah, I guess it is. So you’re saying you haven’t been to Kansas City recently?”

“That’s right.” Rue turned to Flint. “I don’t know why you’re asking me all these questions, but all I’m trying to do is keep my nose clean and get on with my life.”

“I understand. And all I’m trying to do is put away the piece of garbage that’s brutalizing my friends and neighbors. It may seem to you like I’m coming down hard, but you’ve been conveniently off the radar during the time each of these assaults took place.”

“But I’m telling the truth.”

“Then you have absolutely nothing to lose by answering questions. But make no mistake, I am going to get this guy.”

“I’m not violent, Sheriff. I wasn’t even a violent drunk. Can I get back to work now?”
